Refurbished iPhone Tier List 2026: Every Model Ranked

Refurbished iPhone Tier List 2026: Every Model Ranked

The Ultimate Refurbished iPhone Tier List 2026: All 30+ Models Ranked

Some iPhones age beautifully. Others age straight into the overpriced category.

An older Pro model can offer better features than a newer standard iPhone, while a budget-friendly model can deliver greater value than an expensive flagship.

At Maple Store, we've ranked 31 iPhones from S-tier to D-tier based on their pre-owned buying value in India. We considered features, software compatibility, battery-related risks, prices and available alternatives.

Planning to buy a pre owned iPhone or comparing second hand iPhone options? Here's what we'd buy, what we'd compare and what we'd skip.

TL;DR: Refurbished iPhone Tier List 2026 at a Glance

Last reviewed: October 2026 | India | Ranked by pre-owned buying value, not absolute performance.

Our verdict: The iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 are our strongest all-round recommendations. The iPhone 13 offers lower-budget value, while the iPhone 17 and older Pro models are worth considering at the right price.

Tier

Buying verdict

S-Tier: Best Buys

iPhone 15, iPhone 16

Best overall value for most buyers

A-Tier: Great Buys

iPhone 13, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 17

Excellent for specific needs at the right price

B-Tier: Compare Carefully

iPhone 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, 16e, 17e, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air

Worth buying when the savings justify the trade-offs

C-Tier: Deep Discounts Only

iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, SE (3rd generation)

Consider only at substantially lower prices

D-Tier: Skip for Most Buyers

iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12 mini, SE (2nd generation)

Age-related compromises outweigh the value for most buyers

Important: These are model-level recommendations. An A-tier iPhone in excellent condition can be a better purchase than an overpriced S-tier device with poor battery health.

The ranking covers the iPhone 11 through iPhone 17 families, iPhone Air and relevant SE models. The recently released iPhone 18 Pro family is excluded because its pre-owned market history is still limited.

How We Ranked Refurbished iPhones for 2026

A better iPhone isn't automatically a better pre-owned purchase.

Our rankings prioritise five considerations:

Factor

What we evaluated

Price-to-value

Cost against comparable iPhones

Everyday usability

Cameras, display, performance and practical features

Software compatibility

Current iOS support, Apple Intelligence eligibility and hardware age

Battery and maintenance

Potential ageing, repair costs and condition risks

Available alternatives

Better options at similar prices

These are editorial buying judgments, not calculated laboratory scores. Individual-device condition can change the recommendation.

Pricing note*: These are historical advertised prices, not live offers. The referenced pre-owned units were sold out when reviewed. Storage, condition, warranty and battery health differ, so the figures aren't directly comparable market averages.

The iPhone 17 example was advertised at ₹20,901 below Apple's listed new-device price. Actual savings depend on condition, warranty and applicable new-device offers.

The comparison illustrates an important point: lower prices matter, but they don't outweigh every feature, age or condition difference.

Why Is the iPhone 13 A-Tier but the iPhone 11 D-Tier?

The cheapest iPhone isn't necessarily the best long-term purchase.

The iPhone 13 offers 5G, an OLED display, newer cameras and a newer processor. We'd prioritise those advantages for someone buying a primary phone in late 2026.

An inexpensive iPhone 11 might still suit basic needs, but its older hardware makes the iPhone 13 a stronger overall recommendation.

Apple currently lists the iPhone 11 and newer supported models as compatible with iOS 27. That doesn't guarantee future update years.

Apple Intelligence compatibility is more selective, beginning with the iPhone 15 Pro family and iPhone 16 generation.

S-Tier Refurbished iPhones: The Best Buys in 2026

iPhone 15: Best Overall Pre-Owned iPhone

The iPhone 15 delivers the upgrades that matter most to everyday buyers: a 48MP main camera, Dynamic Island, USB-C and the A16 Bionic chip.

It's a capable option for photography, work, entertainment and daily use without Pro-model pricing.

  • Buy if: You want modern essentials at a sensible pre-owned price.
  • Skip if: Apple Intelligence, ProMotion or a dedicated telephoto camera matters.
  • Compare instead: iPhone 16 for newer features or iPhone 15 Pro for ProMotion.

Our verdict: The best starting point for most refurbished iPhone buyers.

Compare pre-owned iPhone 15 models at Maple.

iPhone 16: Best for Newer Features

The iPhone 16 adds the A18 chip, Apple Intelligence compatibility, Camera Control, an Action button and macro photography.

These upgrades make sense if you want newer capabilities without paying for a Pro model.

  • Buy if: You want Apple Intelligence and newer camera controls.
  • Skip if: An iPhone 15 already meets your everyday needs for considerably less.
  • Compare instead: iPhone 15 for savings or iPhone 17 for ProMotion.

Our verdict: S-tier when its extra features justify the price difference.

iPhone 16

iPhone 15 Pro: Is an Older Pro Better Than a Newer Standard iPhone?

The iPhone 15 Pro remains attractive for its 120Hz ProMotion display, telephoto camera, USB-C and Apple Intelligence support.

Buy it when those Pro features matter and the device is priced well.

Choose the iPhone 16 instead when you prefer a newer standard model in better condition and don't need dedicated telephoto photography.

iPhone 16 Pro Max 512 GB: Worth Paying Extra?

The iPhone 16 Pro Max 512 GB offers an A18 Pro chip, a 6.9-inch ProMotion display and advanced cameras.

It's particularly relevant for video creators, photographers and people keeping extensive local media libraries.

Buy it if you genuinely need 512 GB and the pre-owned saving is worthwhile.

Skip it if a 256 GB variant meets your needs at a much lower price.

Compare instead: iPhone 16 Pro for a smaller premium phone or iPhone 15 Pro Max for potential savings.

iPhone 17: Why It Earns A-Tier

The iPhone 17 introduces an A19 chip, a 120Hz ProMotion display and upgraded 48MP Dual Fusion cameras.

Our October price snapshot showed a meaningful advertised difference between one pre-owned 256 GB unit and Apple's new-device price.

That makes it a credible A-tier candidate, but only when the individual deal holds up.

  • Buy if: You want newer features and a meaningful saving over new.
  • Skip if: New-device offers narrow the difference or an iPhone 16 offers better value.
  • Compare instead: A similarly graded iPhone 16 with the same storage.

Our verdict: Great hardware and potentially strong pre-owned value, provided the price and condition justify it.

B-Tier Refurbished iPhones: Compare Before Buying

B-tier models aren't necessarily bad phones. Their value depends more heavily on price, age or specific feature preferences.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: Are They Still Worth Buying?

Both models offer ProMotion, telephoto cameras and A15 Bionic performance.

The iPhone 13 Pro is easier to handle, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max offers a larger display and higher original battery-life ratings.

Neither supports Apple Intelligence, and individual battery condition becomes increasingly important with age.

Our verdict: Buy for specific Pro features at a significant discount. Otherwise, compare the iPhone 15 or 15 Plus.

iPhone 14 256 GB: Smart Storage Upgrade or Poor Value?

An iPhone 14 256 GB can make sense if you need additional storage for photos, games and offline media.

However, the iPhone 15 adds USB-C, Dynamic Island and a 48MP main camera.

  • Buy if: You need 256 GB and the iPhone 14 offers a clear saving.
  • Skip if: An iPhone 15 with sufficient storage costs only slightly more.
  • Compare instead: iPhone 13 for budget value or iPhone 15 for newer features.

Our verdict: Extra storage is useful, but it shouldn't outweigh the whole-device value.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16

The iPhone 17e offers an A19 chip, Apple Intelligence, MagSafe and 256 GB starting storage. The iPhone 16 offers greater camera versatility through Ultra Wide and macro photography, along with Camera Control.

Our verdict: Choose the 17e for newer processing and storage value. Choose the 16 for its additional camera flexibility. Compare equivalent storage and condition.

iPhone Air: A Specialist Purchase

The iPhone Air's standout feature is its remarkably thin, lightweight design.

Buy if: Portability and design are your priorities.

Skip if: You want greater camera versatility.

Compare instead: iPhone 17.

C-Tier Refurbished iPhones: Deep Discounts Only

iPhone 13 Pro Max

These phones make sense only at prices that compensate for their limitations. We'd avoid an apparently cheap device that immediately needs expensive repairs.

D-Tier Refurbished iPhones: Skip for Most Buyers

These devices can still handle everyday tasks and remain compatible with iOS 27. But for most primary-phone buyers, we'd prioritise newer hardware and better long-term practicality.

Always compare similar storage, battery health and device condition before deciding.

How to Check If a Refurbished iPhone Is Worth Buying

Even an S-tier model can be a bad purchase if the individual device isn't right.

Before buying, check:

  • Battery health: Maximum capacity, performance warnings and possible replacement costs.
  • Condition and parts: Display, cameras, cosmetic grade and available Parts and Service History.
  • Storage and price: Compare equivalent capacities and total ownership costs.
  • Ownership: Verify device identity and never buy an iPhone still protected by the previous owner's Activation Lock.
  • Warranty: Read coverage, exclusions and claim procedures.

A second hand phone can offer excellent value, but the device's history and condition matter more than a low advertised price.

Frequently Asked Questions About Refurbished iPhones in 2026

Q1. Which is the best pre owned iPhone to buy in India in 2026?
A. We'd recommend the iPhone 15 for overall value, iPhone 16 for newer features and iPhone 13 for a lower budget. The iPhone 17 is worth comparing when its pre-owned discount is meaningful.

Q2. Is a second hand iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max still worth buying?
A. Yes, at the right price. Both offer ProMotion and telephoto photography, while the Pro Max adds a bigger display and higher original battery ratings. Check battery condition carefully and compare with newer iPhone 15 models.

Q3. Should I buy an iPhone 14 256 GB or an iPhone 15?
A. Choose the iPhone 14 256 GB when additional storage and a lower price matter most. Choose the iPhone 15 for USB-C, Dynamic Island and its 48MP main camera, provided the storage meets your needs.

Q4. Is an iPhone 16 Pro Max 512 GB worth buying pre-owned?
A. Yes, if you need extensive local storage, advanced cameras and a large ProMotion display. Otherwise, a 256 GB variant or iPhone 16 Pro may offer better value.

Q5. What should I check when comparing iPhone second hand listings?
A. Check battery health, storage, device condition, Parts and Service History, ownership clearance and warranty coverage. Never purchase a device with unresolved Activation Lock.

Q6. Is a refurbished iPhone better than a regular second hand phone?
A. Not automatically. Refurbishment may involve inspection or repairs, while second-hand simply means previous ownership. The testing standards, disclosed condition, parts and warranty determine the actual quality of the purchase.

Q7. Where can I buy a pre owned iPhone with warranty in India?
A. You can compare Maple Certified Pre-Owned iPhone models at the Maple Store. Eligible devices undergo structured quality checks and come with applicable limited warranty coverage. Review the individual listing and warranty terms before purchasing.

Here's where we'd start:
