Apple Pay in India: What We Know So Far
India has a payment option for almost every situation. Scan a QR code for chai, tap your card at the supermarket, or pay a friend back before they remind you again. So when Apple Pay arrives, the obvious question is: do we really need another way to pay?
Launched in India on 30 September 2026, Apple Pay brings card payments to your iPhone and Apple Watch, with online payments available at participating checkouts too. We at Maple like features that make the devices you already own work better together. But does Apple Pay change how you pay every day? Let's find out.
Understand Apple Pay and Its Current Availability in India
Apple Pay works through Apple Wallet. Add an eligible bank card, authenticate on your device, and hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near a compatible contactless reader. Online, you can use it at supported checkouts without repeatedly entering your card details.
Here's what you need:
|
Device |
Compatibility |
|
iPhone |
iPhone XR or later, running iOS 18 or later |
|
Apple Watch |
Series 6 or later, running watchOS 11 or later, paired with a compatible iPhone |
|
iPad |
Compatible models for supported in-app and online payments |
|
Bank card |
Eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa or Mastercard credit card |
At launch, card support is limited, so owning a compatible device doesn't automatically make you eligible. Mac support is coming soon.
Our suggestion at Maple? Check your current iPhone before considering an upgrade. You don't have to buy the latest iPhone for Apple Pay. The iPhone XR onwards supports it, provided you're running iOS 18 or later and have an eligible card. You don't need the newest model just to access this feature.
Explore How Apple Pay Works With Indian Banks, Cards and UPI
Think of Apple Pay as another way to use an eligible credit card, not another UPI app. Your existing UPI AutoPay mandates for subscriptions such as Netflix won't automatically transfer to Apple Pay. They're separate payment arrangements.
Apple Pay doesn't combine your UPI apps, bank account, and credit cards into one universal wallet. It gives eligible cardholders another way to pay within the Apple ecosystem.
Check Apple Pay's Security, Privacy and Contactless Payment Features
Apple Pay uses a unique, device-specific account number instead of sharing your actual card number with merchants. You authenticate on your device, and if your iPhone goes missing, Find My lets you lock it or suspend payments.
Your eligible card's usual rewards and benefits continue, too. It's a useful security layer, although we'd still recommend keeping your device secure and checking your transactions regularly.
Is Apple Pay Replacing the Way You Usually Pay?
Our take? Not necessarily, and that's perfectly fine.

Your situation |
Our suggestion |
|
Paying a stall displaying a UPI QR code |
Stick with GPay, PhonePe, or another supported UPI app |
|
Tapping a credit card at a store |
Use your physical card or Apple Pay |
|
Shopping at a participating online checkout |
Try Apple Pay to avoid repeatedly entering card details |
|
Buying water after a run without your phone |
Use Apple Pay on a configured, compatible Apple Watch at a contactless terminal |
India already has contactless cards, and UPI Tap & Pay offers another way to pay through supported UPI apps and compatible NFC-enabled merchant acceptance points. Apple Pay isn't inventing the tap. Its difference is that it lets you use an eligible bank card through your Apple devices.
Imagine finishing a run and stopping for water. With an eligible card set up on your Apple Watch, you can pay at a compatible contactless terminal without carrying your phone. But if the stall accepts only UPI QR payments, Apple Pay won't open PhonePe or GPay to scan it.
Travelling abroad? Apple Pay can make paying with an eligible card more convenient at supported terminals, but foreign-exchange rates and international transaction fees still apply. Easier doesn't automatically mean cheaper.
Review Apple's Announcements and Potential Launch Challenges
The biggest limitation is card eligibility. If you don't have a supported Axis Bank credit card, a compatible iPhone alone won't get you started. The merchant must accept Apple Pay, too.
Apple may expand support over time, but we wouldn't recommend being excited based on unconfirmed bank partnerships. Check Apple's official list of supported banks and cards before setting it up.
What Should Indian iPhone Users Expect Next?
Our take at Maple? Apple Pay is a useful extra, not a reason to overhaul your payment habits or rush into an upgrade. If you regularly use eligible credit cards at supported stores or online checkouts, it could make those payments more convenient. If you're happy paying through UPI QR codes, you may not notice much difference.
And if you're shopping for an iPhone, consider compatibility before paying more for a newer model. A suitable pre-owned iPhone can still offer Apple Pay alongside the features its hardware supports.
At Maple, we'd say get the iPhone that makes sense for you. If your current phone does what you need, there's no point spending extra just to get Apple Pay. A new payment feature is exciting, but it shouldn't decide your next phone purchase for you.
FAQs
Q1. Which banks support Apple Pay in India?
A. At launch, Apple Pay supports eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. More banks may be added over time, so check Apple's official list of supported banks for updates.
Q2. Can I use Apple Pay with Google Pay, PhonePe or BHIM?
A. No. Apple Pay doesn't open other UPI apps or scan their QR codes. You can continue using GPay, PhonePe, BHIM or another supported UPI app separately for QR payments and bank transfers.
Q3. Will Apple Pay transactions appear on my bank statement?
A. Yes. Payments made through Apple Pay using an eligible credit card should appear on that card's statement. The transaction description can vary by merchant and issuer. It's still a card transaction, not a UPI payment.
Q4. Does Apple Pay charge a fee for payments in India?
A. Apple doesn't charge users a separate fee for making purchases through Apple Pay. Your card's existing terms and any applicable bank charges still apply.
Q5. Can I use Apple Pay on my Apple Watch without carrying my iPhone?
A. Yes. Once an eligible card is set up on a compatible Apple Watch, you can make supported contactless payments without carrying your iPhone. The shop must accept contactless card payments.
Q6. Can I use Apple Pay to pay for Netflix or other subscriptions?
A. You can use Apple Pay where a supported app or website offers it at checkout. However, an existing Netflix subscription paid through UPI AutoPay won't automatically transfer to Apple Pay. You would need to change the payment method separately if the service supports Apple Pay.
Q7. Can I use Apple Pay outside India?
A. Apple Pay can be used at compatible contactless terminals and supported online checkouts abroad, subject to your card's international-use settings and issuer restrictions. Foreign-exchange rates and international transaction fees may still apply.
Q8. Is Apple Pay safe if my iPhone is lost or stolen?
A. Apple Pay uses a device-specific account number instead of sharing your actual card number with merchants. If your iPhone goes missing, use Find My to lock it or suspend payments. Contact your card issuer if you suspect unauthorised transactions.
Q9. Can I use Apple Pay on a second hand iPhone or pre-owned iPhone?
A. Yes, provided the device meets Apple's compatibility and software requirements and you have an eligible card. You don't need the newest iPhone model to use Apple Pay.
Q10. Do I need an internet connection to use Apple Pay in a store?
A. An in-store contactless Apple Pay payment generally doesn't require an active mobile data connection on your iPhone at the moment of payment. You must have added an eligible card beforehand, and the merchant's terminal must be able to process the transaction.
